What Is Universal Design?

Developed in 1997 by Ronald Mace and a team of architects, product designers, and engineers at NC State University. The goal: design environments, products, and services that work for everyone — regardless of age, size, ability, or disability. It's not a special accommodation. It's just good design.

"Universal design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability."

The 7 Principles of Universal Design

Principle What It Means + Example
1. Equitable Use Useful to people with diverse abilities. Same means for all when possible; equivalent when not. No segregation. Example: automatic doors benefit wheelchair users, people with hands full, everyone.
2. Flexibility in Use Accommodates wide range of preferences and abilities. Example: scissors designed for right- or left-handed use; adjustable-speed escalators.
3. Simple and Intuitive Use Easy to understand regardless of experience, language, or concentration level. Example: a coffee machine with clear icons that anyone can figure out without reading the manual.
4. Perceptible Information Communicates necessary information effectively, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities. Example: audio announcements plus visual displays on transit.
5. Tolerance for Error Minimizes hazards and adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Example: undo function in software; guard rails on staircases.
6. Low Physical Effort Can be used efficiently and comfortably with minimum fatigue. Example: lever door handles instead of round knobs.
7. Size and Shape for Approach and Use Appropriate size and space for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of body size or posture. Example: wide aisles in stores; low counters for wheelchair access.
