If you ever met Butch Cappel, you didn't forget him. A country boy through and through, Butch had a way of putting folks at ease the moment they pulled up to Cappel Canine. He talked straight, worked hard, and had a God-given gift for understanding dogs that most people couldn't begin to explain.
I knew Butch through phone calls and emails. When he wanted something changed on the website—a word or two, or sometimes a whole new look—I'd be the one he called. And if I ever had questions about our dog, it was no trouble asking for his help. I know he was glad to do it. That was just Butch.
I never had the chance to meet him in person. Health issues of my own kept me from visiting friends in Texas. He wanted to train a dog for me. I wanted a dog trained by him. It just never worked out, and that's something I'll always regret.
Butch was a storyteller—a good one at that. He had this way about him, always upbeat, that warm southern voice that could turn your whole day around. He wasn't the type to complain or let on when things were hard. I found out later I was one of the last people to speak with him, just hours before he went to the hospital. I had no idea anything was wrong. That's just who he was.
His voice is something I can still hear if I just think about him. I wish he'd had the chance to make an audio version of Lifestyle Dog Training. It's a good read for dog owners—easy to understand, practical, the way Butch explained things. But hearing him tell it would've been something special.
Butch spent his life doing what he loved—training dogs and helping people build real relationships with their four-legged family members. He worked with everything from backyard pets to executive protection dogs and police K-9s. He supplied trained security dog teams for the George W. Bush presidential reelection campaign and wrote that book to pass along what he'd learned over a lifetime. He wasn't one to brag, but the man knew his stuff, and he had the results to prove it.
Butch's YouTube channel is still up and full of videos that dog lovers can learn from—training tips, demonstrations, and a whole lot of Butch being Butch. If you never got to meet him in person, that's the next best thing.
He passed on March 26, 2025, but the dogs he trained, the people he helped, and the trainers he mentored will carry his work forward for years to come.
