About Living Light
Living Light is a small, independent guide to bioluminescence -- made for anyone who has ever seen a firefly and wondered how it works.
What we are about
Bioluminescence is one of nature's most beautiful tricks, and one of its most useful. We want to make it easy to understand, easy to share and easy to go and see for yourself -- responsibly.
We stick to well-established science. Where scientists are still debating something, like the exact purpose of a glow, we say so with words like "may", "thought to" or "one idea is".
Where our information comes from
Our content is drawn from widely accepted findings in marine biology, entomology and mycology, including research from ocean institutes, natural history museums, national parks and peer-reviewed studies. If you spot an error, please let us know and we will fix it.
About the artwork
Every illustration on this site, including our jellyfish logo, is original artwork created for Living Light. The illustrations are decorative, so screen readers skip them -- all the information is in the text.
Accessibility statement
Living Light is built so that everyone can use it, whether you browse with a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, voice control or a screen magnifier.
- A "Skip to main content" link appears as soon as you press Tab.
- Every page uses clear landmarks (header, navigation, main content and footer) and a logical heading order.
- Text and links meet WCAG 2.1 AA color contrast, and links are underlined so they never rely on color alone.
- Every link, button and form field shows a clear focus outline.
- Text is sized in relative units, so it grows with your browser settings and zoom.
- Glow animations are brief, and they are switched off entirely if your device is set to reduce motion.
- Everything works without JavaScript; scripts only add the share buttons and the contact form helper.
If anything on the site is hard for you to use, please tell us. We take every report seriously.
