Active Listening
Listening is more than waiting for your turn to speak. It's about truly understanding
what the other person is saying.
- Maintain eye contact - Shows you're engaged (but don't stare)
- Use verbal affirmations - "I see," "Go on," "That makes sense"
- Ask clarifying questions - "What did you mean by...?"
- Summarize what you heard - "So what you're saying is..."
- Don't interrupt - Let them finish their thought
Body Language Awareness
Over 50% of communication is non-verbal. Your body often speaks louder than your words.
- Open posture
- Uncrossed arms, facing the person, leaning slightly forward shows interest
- Facial expressions
- Match your expression to the conversation. Smile when appropriate.
- Personal space
- Respect boundaries. Different cultures have different comfort zones.
Difficult Conversations
Not all conversations are easy. Here's how to handle challenging discussions:
- Choose the right time and place - Private, when both parties are
calm
- Use "I" statements - "I feel hurt when..." instead of "You
always..."
- Focus on the issue - Not the person. Avoid personal attacks
- Stay calm - Take breaks if emotions run high
- Seek understanding - Not just to win the argument
The Power of Empathy
"When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you
may learn something new."
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It's the
foundation of meaningful connection.
